Harmonica Maintenance 101: How to Clean and Care for Your Harp
A harmonica is an investment in sound — and like any instrument, it lasts longer and plays better when you take care of it. Here's how to keep your harp in top shape.
1. Clean your mouth before playing
The biggest enemy of a harmonica is food and sugar. Avoid playing right after eating, and never play after sugary drinks. A quick rinse prevents residue from clogging the reeds.
2. Tap it out after every session
When you finish, gently tap the harmonica — holes facing down — against your palm to clear saliva and moisture that would otherwise corrode the reeds.
3. Let it dry properly
Store your harp at room temperature with the holes facing down or on its side so moisture can escape. Avoid sealing it in a cold case while wet.
4. Cleaning the comb and covers
- Plastic-comb harmonicas can be carefully disassembled and the plastic parts rinsed.
- Wooden-comb harmonicas should not be soaked — the wood swells. Wipe gently instead.
5. What about the reeds?
Never poke metal objects into the reeds. If a reed sticks, a soft puff of air or a thin slip of paper slid gently through usually frees debris.
6. Storage
Always keep your harmonica in its case when not in use to protect it from dust and drops.
